The Cabin House
I spotted the Cabin House, which just so happens to be next door to Casa Desierto, during the renovation of Casa Desierto. The Cabin was in very poor condition, and most people wouldn't even notice it because it was hidden behind overgrown desert brush, trees and rusted out cars that made it feel more like a junk yard than a buried treasure.
Despite its poor condition, I saw the immense potential this dilapidated cabin had, and a few years after I finished Casa Desierto, the Cabin House came on the market, I made an offer and was able to get it.
The Cabin House is inspired by Mid Century & Japanese design, which emphasizes using natural materials, including reclaimed oak, stone & brick as the primary building blocks of the home. Using Wabi-Sabi design principles, the entire home was gutted and reassembled using reclaimed materials like oak flooring & quarried stone for the fireplace and exterior walls, cedar paneling, and handmade clay tiles.
It truly is moody & cozy cabin built right into the gigantic desert boulders.
What makes the Cabin House so special are the numerous details that went into constructing each room. For example, the bedrooms have their own built in platform bed, cedar plank wood backing, and natural stone side tables.
I also love the contrast between the cedar molding that frames in the rooms against the cream walls and oak flooring. These design choices were made to give the feeling of a rustic and sophisticated feeling to the cabin.
Quiet, refined luxury.
One of my favorite bathrooms ever, the bathroom was designed to maximize the private, but awe-inspiring backyard boulders that come right up to the bathroom window.
During the daytime, the bathroom floods with gorgeous light that illuminates the green/brown ceramic bathroom tiles.
Whereas at night on a full moon, the bathroom is illuminated with the soft, pale moon light.
